Stories Never to Forget – Synagogue Appingedam

Zurück Download

The exhibition design for the old synagogue in the town of Appingedam, Netherlands, ties in with the town’s historical legacy. It collects the stories of 56 Jewish citizens who had lived in Appingedam before World War II. Presented here are 56 “unfinished” stories, written in books with blank pages symbolising their lives dispossessed by deportation. The design aim of the bookcase, made of Corten steel, was to show signs of the destruction that both war and time put on things and people. In order to convey the idea that history extends into the present, the bookcases have lights that respond to visitor movement, making them light up as if alive and breathing.
