Carnival of Hell

Zurück Download

Taking up the poetic image of the officer and author Ernst Jünger, who described the First World War in 1916 in his war diaries as a “Fastnacht der Hölle” (Carnival of Hell), this exhibition focuses on the direct emotions of people involved, as well as their experiences and perceptions during the war. Five sensory points simulate specific sensory impressions based on samples and animations, showing how this war tasted, smelled, felt, looked and sounded. The centre of the exhibition is formed by three large showcases with authentic and personal exhibits from the First World War, localised according to setting: the front line, the base and the home front.
