Yiannis Charalambopoulos was born in Thessaloniki and studied graphic design and typography in Athens and in London where he completed the MA course in Typo/Graphic Studies at the London College of Communication. Yiannis is one of the founding members of Beetroot Design Agency, the Greek based team that was awarded Red Dot: Agency of the Year 2011 and created “The Greek Monsters” exhibition in return! Beetroot’s creative mission is to discover, develop and utilise the true essence of an idea, service or product and then grow and expand it into a strong brand that becomes recognised, appreciated and praised all around the globe. Beetroot operates and promotes collaborative work between multidisciplinary artists and designers and the team’s ethos may be summarised by the phrase “I am many”. Beetroot is the communication design force behind Greece’s most prominent organisations, institutions, products and companies and its unconventional perspective and signature never-the-same-thing-twice work has won the team many national and international awards. Yiannis is thrilled to be part of the red dot jury: “As a proud and honored member of a design team that often crosses our industry’s limits, I will keep an eye for those who not only created radical work, but also managed to convince their clients to let them do it (or didn’t let them stop them)! We definitely need more of those!”
This year, it is your first time taking part as red dot jury member. What are you looking forward to, if you think of your premiere as a juror for the Red Dot Award: Communication Design?
The Red Dot Award: Communication Design is one of the most prestigious events of its kind and we feel privileged to be part of its jury. First and foremost we want to stand up to the legacy and aim of the Red Dot that is to discover, award and promote excellence in the communication design field. Red Dot is not about the present, it is about the future and we will take extra care to help distinguish the designers who will “push the envelope further” and will allow us all to see communication from a radically new perspective. Also we really look forward to make new friends with which we share the vision of changing the world to the better via communication design!
What will you look out for while evaluating a work?
One of our team’s mottos is “no past” meaning that although we acknowledge, as designers, our roots, attachments and career, we would rather abandon all of that on the spot for a brand new adventure! Insecurity is one of the foundations on which passion can grow and “new” has more to teach you than the “tried” and certainly more than the “expired”. Beetroot’s contribution as jury will be to keep an eye open for anything fresh!
As a designer, what would you still like to achieve in the future?
Beetroot wants to change the world to the better or die trying! We believe that one of the reasons there is still so much strife in this world is bad communication. Design stimulates the senses so that a message can get through to a person faster, easier and more accurately. There are so many communication gaps that need strong bridges and who is better to engineer them than a communication designer. We are passionate and happy about our work on products, organizations and services and we probably never seize to be. In the future we want to invest more of our time in our self-initiated projects and our social awareness campaigns.
