While manufacturers and designers around the world are being invited to register their works for the “red dot award: product design 2013”, we are presenting you with a selection of the award-winning works from last year’s competition in this special publication.

In 2012, the designers of 2ND WEST | design for public received the “red dot: best of the best” for the outstanding design of the capsule coffee machine UNO.

“The minimalist design of the UNO capsule coffee machine succeeds in achieving a contemporary simplicity. Its balanced lines and proportions make it appear to have been created as a single unit. The capsule coffee machine is functionally well-engineered and can be used intuitively, rendering the experience of making coffee easier and more enjoyable”, stated the renowned experts of the red dot jury.

Architectural delight

“Everything should be as simple as possible, but not simpler“ is a quote attributed to famous physicist and Nobel-Prize winner, Albert Einstein. This is how he describes the difficulty of reducing complex concepts to their meaningful essence. The design of the UNO capsule coffee machine absolutely achieves this.

With its puristic and clearly formed body, balanced lines and proportions, it appears to have been created as a single unit. The concept of reducing things to their essence is carried through to the controls of the coffee machine: a single button allows for an intuitive handling. The functionally well-engineered device strives for sustainability. Almost all of the plastic injection moulded parts have no coating and can therefore easily be recycled. In addition, the recommended 12 coffee varieties are also UTZ certified and follow the strict regulations that govern sustainable coffee production.

red dot: Is there a motive that is of significance to your work?
Michael Thurnherr & Manuel Gamper: The search for simplicity. How operating a device can be made easier or something can be omitted without compromising.

How would you define the term quality?
Does it make sense? Does it add value? Is it fun?

What are the greatest challenges that you currently see in your branch of industry?
Not losing sight of the essential and daring to say “no” from time to time.
